Fragments of Original and Fan Writings

Theme #06: A Taste of the Divine (Persona 3 Fanfiction)

This is like… “complete” but not.  Haha, if anything you can think of it like a prologue or a summary of a greater fic that may or may not ever get written.  It’d be well suited to be like the drabble series I never finished for Soul Eater.

Summary:  Hamuko and Minato are alone, but they’re not because they have each other.

Hamuko generally didn’t think about it very much. She was emotion and he was logic. The end.

The beginning went something like this:

Back in kindergarten she had been bullied for her red-brown hair and wished, wished with all her might that she had blue hair like her mom instead of red hair like her dad.

During that instance, she looked in the mirror and saw a blue-haired boy looking back at her.

The next day the world turned green and her parents died.

She stopped caring what color her hair was at that point.

It was a year later when at the orphanage she thought, “I wish I wasn’t so alone,” and a boy’s voice echoed, “Me too.”

At first, Hamuko was scared, but then she relaxed. She just knew this person couldn’t hurt her.

“Who are you?” she asked.

“You can hear me?” a surprised sounding voice answered.

She giggled. “Yes! I’m Arisato Hamuko!”

“I… I’m Arisato Minato…”

“You’re the boy/girl in the mirror!” they both cried in unison.

They decided they must be from mirror worlds. They bad the same birthday and blood type and parents and if they focused on their reflections they could see each other. They talked for hours about their favorite shows, songs, and movies.

Finally, Hamuko asked what she had been itching to ask from the beginning. “Minato-kun?”

“Yeah, Hamuko-chan?”

“Are our parents alive in your world?”

“…no they’re not.”

And Hamuko cried and mourned losing her parents all over again. She cried enough to mourn for Minato as well who never had.

He let her cry and when she stopped, they promised to be there for each other no matter what. Their lives stayed thoroughly linked even to the point where they finished their signatures at the same moment when they signed their own contracts nine years later in a dark dorm lobby.

Okay, so after I finished playing 999, I had this idea of a monster of a fic where MShe in P3P and MC were connected to each other from their own worlds and that their different personalities are the result of them being like twins despite having never met in person.

Minato and Hamuko, as I generally call them, would balance each other out.  The coldness of Minato is because Hamuko expresses enough emotion for the both of them and the forwardness of Hamuko is tempered by Minato’s logic.  I think it’s great how the two of them have such different/opposing personalities in fandom and in game despite being genderbent versions of each other.  It really proves how limitless the interpretations are of these characters.

During the monster fic I never wrote (because I am awful at writing long things), the two of them would bounce ideas off of each other during missions and social links, like going in different orders and using the information to help them.  One example would be how Hamuko can form a social link early on with Yukari but it takes a while for Minato so she can give him information to help his social link go more smoothly than it would otherwise.  Meanwhile, Hamuko would know not to encourage Rie to chase after Kenji because he likes that dumb teacher.

You can see why I never wrote this fic.  It would’ve been ridiculously long and involved basically rewriting the entire game.  But!  The idea of two people living their lives forever connected in parallel worlds is super wonderful to me and I might try to write something original one day.

It’s actually pretty obvious I love parallel worlds because I write about them a lot in KHR fanfic and even Soul Eater fanfic.  This idea actually predates my reading of KHR and my love for that series might stem from my interest in exploring different possibilities.
