Theme #05: Walking Through the Graveyard (Original Fiction)

This was the first piece I officially wrote for Camp NaNoWriMo.  I wrote that fem!Narukami fic just because and then it fit Theme #13 so well I had to use it.

This is definitely a WIP.  I don’t think it’s even a completed draft.

Summary:  A very strange young person plans the “greatest” heist of all:  walking through a graveyard.

Sometimes a person needs a little adventure. Now, I don’t mean go backpacking with no supplies or trying to become a hero or some nonsense like that. Nor do I mean a lame-ass adventure like shopping at a new grocery store or using a new brand of shampoo.

I am talking about a legit small adventure.

What is a small adventure? Well, I’m glad you asked non-existent person.

A small adventure is something that has the thrill of almost danger but doesn’t quite have a significant danger aspect. One example would be walking around in a bad neighborhood. If done at night it’s dangerous and I pray for your soul. But, if you go during the day or with friends when traveling at night, there’s the thrill of the possibility of something happening even if it’s unlikely.

Got the idea?

Well, I’m not so boring that I’d get my adventure from wandering around dark alleys. I’m not too into the idea of muggings, genuine danger or not.

What I like to do is visit abandoned areas. I’ll take naps on the porches of run down houses or sneak into overgrown backyards. It’s exciting to think about getting yelled at by a stranger and running running running away.

I’m kind of known as the weird guy in my small time. Some people think I’m possessed by the giant of a house I stayed in on a dare one Halloween. Others think I’m narcoleptic. It’s fun hearing about the different theories.

But whatever, the idea of a supernatural influence is pretty cool and I’ve decided to run with that idea. At the edge of the downtown there’s a positively ancient cemetery. There are all sorts of awesome stories about the oldest graves.

I’ve been scoping the place out. At least twice a week, I make an effort to walk past the cemetery and polish my mental map of the perimeter.

Soon, soon it shall be time for my attack!

What am I attacking? Well, nothing. Basically I’m going to start walking through the place at night. It’ll be awesome. The possibility of grave robbers and ghosts will make this my best “adventure” yet.

Of course, it’s totally disrespectful to the dead… and illegal since it’s trespassing, but I can and do trespass in my sleep. No worries there.

Hence the scoping out. I need to note all the exits to make sure I can escape promptly if necessary. I’ve been careful about stopping by to make sure the town doesn’t figure out my plan. It’d be a total pain if they stop me from treading on graves.

I don’t know what the big deal is. They’re dead anyway. Who cares if I step four feet over their bodies?

Anyway, my work has paid off and I’m ready for my nighttime walk.

I’ll probably do it Tuesday night. No one goes out on a Tuesday.

I’m not quite sure what possessed me to write this.  It’s just kind of a silly thing that I think could be part of something much more.  There isn’t much to say other than that the protagonist’s hometown is loosely based after mine.
